The Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) seeks a postdoctoral scientist in
physical oceanography to work in the Atlantic Ocean fresh-water Budgets
and Transports research unit. The position is limited to three years is
based in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The focus of the position is quantification of fresh water changes in
the western Nordic Seas. The successful candidate will carry out
measurements using autonomous platforms such as gliders and wave gliders
and combine them with data from other ship-borne and remote sensing
sources. Analysis will include existing data sets from the past decades.
The candidate will work in a team that combines observations and
numerical modeling. The work is embedded in international programs. The
candidate is expected to participate in scientific cruises.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in physical oceanography
or related disciplines. A solid background in fluid dynamics and
experience with data are required; experience in sea-going work is
desirable.

The Norwegian Ice Service at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute
seeks candidates for research position in applied science and
development. The position is permanent, open immediately, and located in
Tromso, Norway.
The Norwegian Ice Service produces high-resolution ice charts of the
European sector of the Arctic and Weddell Sea sector of the Antarctic
and is also engaged in research projects for national and international
funding agencies as well as commercial clients.
The successful candidate will work on development of geospatial data
processing software including ice charting tools, research new
techniques for sea ice information extraction from satellite data such
as active microwave sensors, national and international research
projects, and analysis of ice conditions for Ice Service customers.
Qualifications for this position include postgraduate level education
(Masters degree or higher) in a geoscience discipline, experience with
software development in Python, experience with application development
using Geographic Information System software libraries, a research
background in active microwave satellite sensors (i.e., Synthetic
Aperture Radar or radar altimeters), experience working with Linux-based
PC systems, and with national and international collaboration on project
work including writing papers, reports and proposals. The ability to
develop solutions to set goals and good teamwork skills are important,
as well as good skills in written and oral communication in English and
Norwegian

The University of Tromso, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and
Education seeks candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Arctic
Governance and Indigenous Innovation. The position is for a fixed term
of three years and is based on Tromso, Norway.
The position is organized under the Centre for Sami Studies, which is
responsible for the coordination of the multidisciplinary Master's
degree program in Indigenous Studies and is currently involved in
research in the fields of Sami history, archeology, language, culture
and religion, indigenous rights, arctic governance, and resource
management, and biology.
The position is open for persons with a doctoral degree in social
sciences. The successful candidate is expected to do research on
developments in northern areas of the world and how the challenges
facing indigenous peoples and other northern inhabitants demand
different types of governance. Priority will be given to proposals that
fit well with one or more of the research themes: arctic governance,
resource and ecosystem-based management, innovation and traditional
ecological knowledge, and indigenous rights.
The main objective on the appointment is to qualify for work in senior
academic positions. No one may be appointed to more than one fixed term
period as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

- Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
Remote Sensing of Sea Ice
Tromso, Norway
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) seeks applicants for a postdoctoral
research fellow position in remote sensing of sea ice. The position is
for a fixed term of three years, with a possible one-year extension, and
is based in Tromso, Norway.
The work will be conducted in the Research Department, Section of Oceans
and Sea Ice for the project "Combined remote and in situ study of sea
ice thickness and motion in the Fram Strait - CORESAT." The successful
applicant will study arctic sea ice processes using both satellite
remote sensing techniques and field observations. The focus will be on
improving our understanding of the sea ice thickness and sea ice drift
distribution in the Fram Strait region.
The successful candidate will have completed a PhD with a strong
background in physics, oceanography, satellite remote sensing,
geophysics, meteorology, or related fields. A profound knowledge of data
processing, especially satellite data, and sound handling of processing
tools (e.g. statistical, mathematical and programming tools) are
required, as the candidate will work with heterogeneous and large data
sets. Expertise in sea ice research will be viewed favorable.
