- Bigelow Laboratory seeks Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Ocean Sciences in Satellite-Derived Productivity Comparisons
East Boothbay, Maine
Bigelow Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral research scientist in the area
of Arctic Ocean primary production. The position will be based in East
Boothbay, Maine.
The work is associated with a recently-funded NASA project involving the
comparison of primary productivity estimates derived from space-based
algorithms, biogeochemical ocean general circulation models, and earth
system models.
Minimal requirements are a PhD in marine science, oceanography, remote
sensing, climate or ecosystem modeling, applied math, or related field.
Preferred qualifications are an ability and interest in working across
biological and physical disciplines, and strong modeling, quantitative,
and statistical skills. The preferred candidate will have published (or
submitted) their dissertation chapters in peer-reviewed journals.
Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a cover letter with brief
description of research interests, and contact information for three
references to jobs [at] bigelow.org. Please reference PD-2013-1 in the
subject line. For full consideration, the application should be received
by 22 April 2013 and the position will remain open until it is filled.

- Three Positions Available
Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology
Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has
three position openings that may be of interest to arctic scientists.
All three positions will be based in the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan.
The Research Institute of Global Change (RIGC) at JAMSTEC seeks a
postdoctoral researcher (PhD required) or technical support staff
(Master's required) for a research program entitled "Understanding
chemistry, transport and surface fluxes of long-lived gases in the
troposphere by a multi-species and multi-model approach." Applicants
must have advanced knowledge in FORTRAN programming, large dataset
handling, visualization software, and UNIX environment. The application
deadline is Thursday, 28 February 2013. For further information, please
go to: http://www.jamstec.go.jp/e/about/recruit/rigc_20130228_2.html.
The RIGC also seeks two scientists one for a project in the area of
ocean climate change research, and the other for a project on tropical
climate variability research. Applicants who engage in
oceanographic/atmospheric research and development are invited to apply.
The application deadline is Thursday, 28 February 2013. For further
information, please go to:
http://www.jamstec.go.jp/e/about/recruit/rigc_20130228.html.
The Institute of Biogeosciences seeks a technical support staff member.
The research aims to clarify the evolution of the mechanism that
established relationships between host animals and chemosynthetic
bacteria in deep-sea metazoans. The successful applicant will be
assigned to the Marine Biodiversity Research Program to support
laboratory culture maintenance and molecular and genetic studies of
chemosynthetic biology. The application deadline is Wednesday, 13 March
2013.

- University of Quebec seeks PhD Student
Aquatic Ecology
Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada
The Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology at the University of Quebec at
Chicoutimi seeks a PhD student for a project on the influence of thawing
permafrost on aquatic food webs. The position is part of a Canada
Research Chair program, and will be based in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada.
The tundra holds one of the Earth's largest pools of organic carbon.
Climate warming and associated changes in permafrost thawing have
increased the risk that this carbon becomes a source of greenhouse
gasses. This scenario has drawn attention to carbon cycling in tundra
ecosystems, including higher organisms like zooplankton that may be able
to convert allochthonous carbon to somatic growth before it enters the
atmosphere.
The successful candidate will carry out research in thaw ponds in
Northern Quebec. Specifically, the PhD project will evaluate zooplankton
growth rates and assimilation of different carbon sources in a set of
thaw ponds that have been subjected to different degrees of permafrost
thawing. Applicants should have a Master's degree in biology, limnology,
environmental sciences, or a closely related subject. Knowledge of
French is advantageous but not mandatory.
To apply, please email a curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts, a
short statement of research interest, and contact information for two
references to Milla Rautio (milla.rautio [at] uqac.ca).
Application deadline: Monday, 1 April 2013.

evaluation, needs assessments, climate change adaptation, and
vulnerability; develop and maintain relationships with science,
industry, public, and non-profit partners; and act as a liaison between
the center and scientists, stakeholders, public, and media at
conferences and industry events using discretion, diplomacy, and
political acumen.
The program manager will also synthesize research results and create
reports to funders and other groups as per program requirements, create
