The Department of Anthropology is offering one and perhaps two
interdisciplinary three-year PhD studentships to work on a project about
human-animal relations. The position(s) will start in September 2013 and
be based in Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Applicants will submit a proposal which fits within the research topic
of a project entitled 'Arctic Domestication,' as specified on the
project website (http://www.arcticdomus.org). Arctic Domus is a
five-year international research project funded by a European Research
Council Advanced Scholarship. The goals of the project are to elaborate
a model of emplaced human-animal relations in the Arctic evoking
theoretical concerns of the definition of the person, the attribution of
agency, and renewed attention to build environments. A full project
synopsis is on the project website within the 'events' section under the
title Two PhD Studentships 2013--2016.

The successful applicant(s) will be expected to do field research in at
least one of the seven circumpolar regions covered by the project and to
integrate one of the four component disciplines of the project
(anthropology, history of science, archaeology, genetics). Candidates
must apply to the PhD program in anthropology, and make it clear that
their application is for an Arctic Domus studentship.

  1. University of Michigan seeks Undergrads or Recent Graduates

The University of Michigan seeks undergraduates or college graduates
interested in ecological research in remote Alaska during summer 2013.
Both paid jobs and paid research fellowships are available. Approximate
fieldwork dates are from 5 June - 25 August 2013.

The fellowships are for second and third year undergraduates and are
through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.
Both positions offer an excellent opportunity to gain research
experience in ecology and meet outstanding research scientists from
around the world. The REU and research assistants will work closely with
a group of scientists on projects from microbial ecology to the linkage
of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems via the movement of carbon and
nitrogen. The broad goals of the projects are to understand the dynamics
of ecosystem function in soils, streams, and lakes, and how tundra
ecosystems will respond to climate change. Fieldwork will be conducted
at the Toolik Lake Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, located in
the foothills of the Brooks Range in northern Alaska.

Experience in ecology, chemistry, microbiology, or data logging is
desirable. Interested applicants must provide a resume and one-page
description of their background (courses, field experience), goals, and

Hiring begins 15 March 2013, and will continue until all positions are

  1. GEOMAR seeks PhD Candidate
    Isotope Geochemistry and Marine Geosciences
    Kiel, Germany

The Research Unit Paleoceanography of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean
Research Kiel is offering a PhD student position within the project "The
Transpolar System of the Arctic Ocean." The position will be based in
Kiel, Germany.

The sub-project "Transpolar Fluxes" focuses on the variability of water
mass and matter transport within the Transpolar System from the Laptev
Sea (Siberian Arctic) to the Fram Strait and its impact on the sensitive
arctic marine ecosystem. The PhD student will be responsible for taking
samples during several Russian-German expeditions to the Arctic Ocean;
processing samples and acquiring the geochemical data with the help of a
student research assistant; and interpretation and publication of the
results.

PhD candidates interested in isotope geochemistry and marine geosciences
are invited to apply. Willingness to participate in seagoing
expeditions, as well as interest in analytical chemical work in the
clean lab and in mass spectrometry is essential. An academic
qualification comparable to a German Diploma degree (equivalent to a
Master's degree including a written thesis) in the field of (marine)
geosciences or related disciplines is required.

  1. Geophysical Institute seeks Research Scientist
    Hydrologic Modeling of a Glacierized Basin
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks a
research scientist to perform hydrological modeling of a glacierized
catchment underlain by discontinuous permafrost, located in central
Alaska. This is a 1.5-year position, and will be based in Fairbanks,
Alaska.

The successful applicant's duties will include numerical model
simulations using the physically based hydrologic model WaSiM, climate
model scenarios, and field data in order to predict recharge into the
proposed Susitna-Watana hydroelectric dam. The project also includes
some fieldwork.

Motivated candidates with a MSc/PhD degree in hydrology,
geosciences/physical geography, physics, engineering, or related fields
are invited to apply. Experience with WaSiM/hydrological modeling, GIS,
glaciology or programming is desirable. The earliest anticipated
start-date is 1 June 2013.

  1. Norwegian Polar Institute seeks PhD Student
    Ocean Acidification Effects on Marine Copepods
    Tromso, Norway

The Norwegian Polar Institute seeks to fill a PhD studentship on ocean
acidification effects on marine copepods. The position is for a duration
of three years, and will be based in Tromso, Norway.

The position will be linked to on-going research on ocean acidification
(OA) effects on marine zooplankton. The successful candidate will be
expected to conduct a series of experimental studies on OA effects
through several generations in boreal and arctic copepod populations
subjected to different levels of increased CO2 concentrations

Formal competence as Master of Science or equivalent is required.
Candidates should have experience in experimental ecological and/or
evolutionary studies. Experience with experimental work on zooplankton
is considered an advantage.
