National Strategy on Inuit Education
Canadian National Committee on Inuit Education
The National Strategy on Inuit Education Report, released by the
Canadian National Committee on Inuit Education and entitled "First
Canadians, Canadians First," is available online.
Canada's Inuit leaders unveiled the national education strategy aiming
to improve the educational experiences of Canadian Inuit youth.
Developed by a committee of Inuit leaders chaired by Mary Simon,
President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the strategy emerged out of
the 2009 Accord on Inuit Education. ITK is the national Inuit
organization in Canada, representing the four Inuit regions of
Nunatsiavut, Labrador; Nunavik, northern Quebec; the Inuvialuit
Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories; and the territory of
Nunavut.
The strategy contains ten comprehensive and wide-reaching
recommendations, including initiatives around engaging parents, creating
bilingual programs, establishing a northern university, standardizing
the Inuit language system, and addressing teacher education and
curriculum.

Gold - Or I'm a Dutchman! Ernest Mansfield (1862-1924)
By: Susan Barr, David Newman, and Greg Nesteroff
Akademika Publishing of Trondheim, Norway announces the release of a new
book, entitled "Gold - Or I'm a Dutchman! Ernest Mansfield (1862-1924)."
This biography examines the life of adventurer, prospector, and author
Ernest Mansfield who circled the globe seeking fortunes and left behind
fascinating tales and a legacy of huts and mining equipment in the
arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Mansfield was involved in several
speculative and controversial enterprises. In the 1890s, he joined the
Klondike gold rush in Canada's Yukon but detoured to the Kootenay
mountains around Nelson, British Columbia. Later he established himself
in the Essex village of Goldhanger and persuaded the local rector and
doctor to join him in prospecting for gold in largely unexplored
Spitsbergen. The trio formed the Northern Exploration Company, which
raised capital on the London stock market to develop gold, marble, and
coal mines. The company erected over fifty buildings in Svalbard, and
employed many Scottish and Norwegian miners for over a decade before
things went awry.
The biography is written by Susan Barr, a special advisor in polar
matters with the Norwegian Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Oslo; David
Newman, a Goldhanger historian and retired professional engineer; and
Greg Nesteroff, a journalist and historian in Nelson, British Columbia.
It is augmented by extracts from Mansfield's books, newspaper and
magazine articles, special maps, and many never-before-published
photographs.
