The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) seeks to fill the
position of Lecturer/Reader for a Senior Arctic Marine Scientist. The
position will be based in Oban, Scotland.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide scientific
leadership and expertise in any area of arctic marine research
compatible with SAMS' research strategy, using observational,
experimental or modeling approaches. The candidate will be expected to
have skills complementing those of existing SAMS' staff, including a
team of arctic marine and atmospheric scientists and a technology group
developing novel sensors. SAMS has a dedicated Arctic Research Theme
and, and this position will forge multidisciplinary collaborations
across the institute, which includes research in marine and atmospheric
physics, technology, geochemistry, ecology and microbiology.

    Beaufort Sea Atmosphere-Ice-Ocean Interactions

The Polar Science Center at the University of Washington's Applied
Physics Laboratory seeks applications for a postdoctoral research
associate. The position will be based in Seattle, Washington.

The successful applicant will be involved in a research project that
aims to advance understanding of atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions in
the seasonal ice zone of the Beaufort Sea through an integrated
observation and modeling program. The emphasis of this project is to
study the effect of changes in sea ice on the atmospheric boundary layer
and clouds, examine how well models currently handle this interaction,
and how representation of relevant processes can be improved.

Candidates should have a PhD in atmospheric sciences or related field,
with significant experience in atmospheric modeling using the Weather
Research and Forecast (WRF) model, data assimilation of in-situ and
remote sensing information, and high-latitude ocean-atmosphere
interactions. Candidates cannot be further than 4 years past their PhD
confirmation date to qualify.

The initial appointment is for 12 months, with extension possible
depending on performance and availability of funding. Application

publications, and the names and addresses of three references.

The National Academy of Sciences seeks candidates for the position of
Board Director, for combined management of the Polar Research Board
(PRB) and the Board on Atmospheric Sciences an Climate (BASC).

BASC is the focal point within the National Academies for activities
related to the atmospheric and climate sciences, including issues
related to technology, policy, applications, and services. The Board
serves as a source for objective, independent advice to the federal
government and others. PRB has a long history of distinguished service
to the polar community. First established in 1958, the PRB exists to
promote excellence in polar science and to provide independent
scientific guidance to federal agencies and the nation on science issues
in the Arctic, the Antarctic, and cold regions in general.

The Board Director will be responsible for the development,
implementation, and ongoing management and evaluation of board
activities in the areas of atmospheric science, climate, and polar
research. The position is responsible for financial management, resource
allocation, and staff planning and management, and is fully accountable
for the performance and results of the department.

Applicants must have a PhD in a related field or equivalent knowledge
with 10 years of related professional experience, 5 of which were in a
supervisory capacity. Demonstrated impact on the advancement of science
or policy through the successful completion of National Academies'
activities or equivalent outside activities and through effective
dissemination of these activities is required.

  1. University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks Graduate Student
    Polar Microbial Oceanography
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks applicants for a graduate
student assistantship in polar microbial oceanography. The position will
be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Funding is available for an M.Sc. student to develop a thesis project
investigating the evolutionary and biogeochemical roles of compatible
solutes in sea ice microbial communities. The student will engage with a
team of researchers at the University of Washington and the Greenland
Climate Research Centre on the broader question of how biophysical
processes (e.g. sea ice, primary production) influence the entry and
fate of elements, greenhouse gases, and contaminants in arctic marine
ecosystems. This is an interdisciplinary project that includes experts
on sea ice, polar oceanography, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, and
genomics. The candidate will have the opportunity to engage with
students and faculty across these disciplines. Fieldwork for the project
is based primarily in Nuuk, Greenland, with the potential for additional
fieldwork conducted on the Research Vessel Sikuliaq
(http://www.sfos.uaf.edu/sikuliaq).

preparations. Competitive applicants will have a strong academic
background in the natural sciences, prior field or research experience,

spectrometry, or other methods of molecular identification.

The Sitka Sound Science Center seeks applicants for three Scientists in
Residency Fellowships (SIRF) available to career scientists. These
one-month fellowships are available for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The fellowships are based in Sitka, Alaska.

The Sitka Sound Science Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission
is to increase understanding and awareness of the aquatic and
terrestrial ecosystem in the Gulf of Alaska. The SIRF program, funded in
part by the National Science Foundation, offers these one-month
mini-sabbaticals to allow scientists time to work on data analysis,
write research results, develop new research questions, and collaborate
with other scientists. The SIRF program also provides a range of
community engagement opportunities for scientists to explain their
research to the public.
