Organizers of the Gordon Research Conference and Seminar: Polar Marine
Science announce a call for abstracts. The seminar, for graduate
students and postdocs, will be held 9-10 March 2013. The full conference
will be held 10-15 March 2013. Both will be convened in Ventura,
California.

The seminar provides a forum for graduate students and postdoctoral
scientists to present their work, discuss cutting edge aspects of their
research, and build collaborative relationships with their colleagues
and established scientists, at a critical time in their careers.
Financial support will be offered in priority to graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows attending both the conference and the preceding
seminar.

The conference will discuss recent developments and challenges emerging
from contemporary and paleo-climate observations and models,
encompassing regional and global scales. The GRC addresses the
structure, functionalities and controls of polar marine systems through
topics such as sea ice biogeochemistry, atmosphere-ocean forcings and
interactions, food web trophodynamics, carbon and elemental cycling and
fluxes, and a spectrum of ecological processes and interactions.

Interested persons must apply for the seminar by 9 February 2013, and
for the conference by 10 February 2013. Early application is
recommended, as the events will likely reach capacity.

Although applications will be accepted until the date noted above, any
applicants who wish to be considered for an oral presentation should
submit their application as soon as possible. The speaker application
deadline is typically four months before the start of the meeting, but
may vary at the discretion of the Chair. Chairs will select speakers
from abstracts submitted by 9 November 2012. Please refer to the

Organizers of the 20th international scientific symposium on The
Integration of Archaeological and Ethnographic Research announce an
invitation for papers and panels. The symposium will take place from 27
May - 2 June 2013 in Irkutsk, Eastern Siberia, Russia.

The primary themes of the conference are ethnoarchaeological research,
environmental archaeology, biosociality, sacred landscapes, alternative
worlds and worldviews, and historical reconstruction. Abstracts are due
by Tuesday, 30 October 2012. Accepted abstracts must be followed by a
longer written summary of the paper by 20 January 2013. Specific

    Arctic Transportation Infrastructure

Organizers announce a conference entitled "Arctic Transportation
Infrastructure: Response Capacity and Sustainable Development in the
Arctic." It will be held 3-6 December 2012 at the Icelandair Hotel
Natura in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Increased resource extraction to support economic and community
development and increased shipping traffic through arctic waters have
resulted in the corresponding need for an increased capacity to respond
by sea and air. Arctic ports and airports serve as an important base for
response, acting as a gateway to support SAR, resource extraction and
development activities, pollution prevention and environmental safety,
and community health and security.

The Arctic Council's Sustainable Development Working Group approved a
project during the Swedish Chairmanship (co-led by the United States and
Iceland) to assess transportation infrastructure. The Arctic Marine and
Aviation Transportation Infrastructure Initiative (AMATII) seeks to
evaluate Northern infrastructure--ports, airports, and response
capability--by inventorying maritime and aviation assets in the Arctic.

The Arctic Transportation Infrastructure conference is part of this
project. Invited participants include policy makers and government
officials; aviation and marine subject matter experts from the private,
public, independent and academic sectors; and community leaders and
Permanent Participants.

During the first part of the conference, arctic experts will meet in
both plenary and work sessions to discuss infrastructure vis-a-vis
response, technology, and investment. Case studies and illustrative
stories of northern aviation and marine infrastructure--contributed by
participants--will serve to highlight the challenges of infrastructure
development in the Arctic and its role in facilitating sustainable
development.

Participants will also have a chance to view and evaluate the Arctic
Port and Airport Database and web-based map, which is the primary
deliverable of this project. Subject matter expert input will help
refine and strengthen this tool.

The workshop will end with an interactive plenary session, discussing
next steps and outlining areas of consideration for a Guidance Document,
a deliverable for this Arctic Council project.
