  1. Alfred Wegener Institute seeks Postdoctoral Candidates
    Glaciology
    Bremerhaven, Germany

The Geosciences division of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and
Marine Research seeks candidates for a postdoctoral position in
glaciology. The position is temporary and limited to five years with an
optional one-year extension. The earliest starting date of this position
is 1 June 2012. It is based in Bremerhaven, Germany.

This postdoctoral position is offered within the HGF young investigators
group entitled "The effect of deformation mechanisms for ice sheet
dynamics," which aims to improve understanding of dynamic processes of
polar ice sheets with respect to the prognosis of sea level evolution.
The overall project goal is to develop a physically based flow law for
ice derived from the micro-physical processes observed via
microstructure investigations.

The successful candidate will focus on establishing a deeper
understanding of the micro-mechanical processes in polar ice through the
development of a new theory of evolution of observed ice
microstructures. This involves extracting information from experimental
observations to derive appropriate mathematical expressions for the
theory. For that purpose many experimental results of the young
investigators group are available, concerning deformation mechanisms in
ice by means of microstructural measurements and numerical simulations.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in the field of physics,
mathematics, materials science, mechanical engineering, geosciences, or
related discipline. Knowledge of thermodynamics, continuum mechanics,
and materials science are required. Previous experience in ice sheet
modeling is an asset. Interdisciplinary collaboration especially with
geophysicists, physicists, and modelers is expected. The candidate
should have excellent English language skills.

Application deadline: Friday, 4 May 2012.

  1. University of Alaska seeks Graduate Fellowship Candidates
Community-based Marine Conservation and Traditional Knowledge
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The University of Alaska, in collaboration with the Bristol Bay Native
Association, seeks candidates for a graduate fellowship in a project
entitled "Building Capacity for Community-based Marine Mammal Management
in Bristol Bay." The fellowship position of research assistant will
start in the fall of 2012. It is funded for two years and is based in
Fairbanks, Alaska.

The project will document ways in which marine mammal ecology and
harvesting patterns among hunters in two Bristol Bay communities and one
Alaska Peninsula community have changed through time. Documentation and
analysis will be achieved through a traditional ecological knowledge
project using in-depth qualitative interviews emphasizing historical
patterns of subsistence use and marine mammal distributions in addition
to real-time boat surveys and GIS technology to map important
contemporary marine mammal habitat features and subsistence sites.

The successful candidate will assist in multiple facets of the project
including interview protocol design, coordinating with village research
assistants, compiling and analyzing data, and in-depth traditional
knowledge interviews.

A PhD or Master's student in the social sciences or an applied
conservation field is preferred, although promising students in other
fields will be considered. Experience with GIS is preferred, as is
experience in working in Alaska Native villages and local knowledge of
the Bristol Bay region.

To qualify for the assistantship, which covers graduate tuition and a
living stipend plus health insurance and limited benefits, applicants
must be a current graduate student at UAF or be accepted into a UAF
graduate program. Application deadline for the graduate program is
Friday, 1 June 2012.

The position is open until filled.
