  1. University of Tromso seeks PhD and Postdoctoral Candidates
Department of Arctic and Marine Biology
    Tromso, Norway

The Department of Arctic and Marine Biology at the University of Tromso
seeks candidates for a PhD position and a postdoctoral fellowship in
marine ecotoxicology. The PhD position is a three-year appointment and
the postdoctoral fellowship is a fixed term of two years. Both positions
are located in Tromso, Norway.

The PhD position is part of the POLARISATION project, which addresses
the long-term effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and some of
the toxicity mechanisms involved in the disruption of lipid homeostasis
in polar cod. The position is connected to the research group of Arctic
Marine System.

The successful candidate should have a Master's degree or equivalent in
marine ecotoxicology, marine biology, or a similar topic with a good
knowledge of relevant molecular biology methods. Some knowledge of in
vivo methodologies and experience working with fish is preferred.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is also part of the POLARISATION
project and will focus on studying the importance of exogenous (quantity
of the food and energy density) and endogenous (intestinal metabolism)
factors affecting the uptake and tissue distribution of polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their metabolites in polar cod.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent in
ecotoxicology, chemistry, or a similar topic with a strong chemistry
background. Knowledge is required of at least some the above-mentioned
analytical methods and knowledge of in vivo experimentation and
experience working with fish is preferred.

Application deadline: Thursday, 12 April 2012.

  1. Danish Climate Centre seeks Climate Researcher
    Danish Meteorological Institute
    Copenhagen, Denmark

The Danish Climate Centre seeks candidates for a Climate Researcher
position. The position is for three years with options for becoming
permanent, and is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Danish Climate Centre is involved in national and international
collaborative modeling and analysis projects including global climate
modeling, regional climate modeling, and modeling the Greenland ice
sheet. A major focus of the activities is developing a fully coupled
Earth system model tool to be operated at global and regional scales.

The successful candidate will work on refining and utilizing climate
models, implement simulations, and will be able to undertake research on
methods for assessing climate change.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills within climate
research, should have some experience running a GCM or an RCM, be
literate in UNIX/Linux operating system, and have a working knowledge of
FORTRAN and/or C and C++. In-depth knowledge about arctic climate issues
is preferable.

Application deadline: Sunday, 15 April 2012.

  1. Nansen Center seeks PhD Candidates
    Oceanography
    Bergen, Norway

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, in collaboration
with the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen, seeks
candidates for a PhD position in oceanography. The position is for three
years and is located in Bergen, Norway.

The research work will focus on using satellite data with in situ
observations and ocean model fields for studies of the ocean circulation
in the high latitudes and the Arctic Ocean. In particular, using new
data from a European Space Agency satellite, a more precise
high-resolution "window" for combining the earth's gravity field and
ocean circulation is now being derived. The PhD position will focus on:

- Advancing the understanding of the relationship between the
detailed gravity field, the mean ocean circulation and the magnitude
of mean ocean transport, in particular for the oceanic exchanges
between the arctic region and the Atlantic Ocean;
- Deriving new insight on the ocean energy budget, and the partition
between mean and time varying ocean circulation; and
- Strengthening the capability to validate ocean models.

It is also likely that the fellowship will be involved in a larger
national and international research effort in this field.

Candidates should hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in
oceanography, applied mathematics, or related fields. Good knowledge and
skills with computer tools, software, and programming are required.

Application deadline: Friday, 20 April 2012.
