To members of the polar earth science community:
The Working Group on Antarctic Geology and Geophysics will be holding a
community meeting at the GSA annual meeting in Salt Lake City. Anyone
active or interested in Antarctic and Arctic research sponsored by NSF-OPP
is invited to attend. The meeting is scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday, Oct.
21, and will be held in the Flagstaff Room of the Little America Hotel.
This informal meeting will precede the annual Friends of Polar Earth
Science social that will kick off at 7pm or so, complete with cash bar. I
will advise you of any changes. Please pass this on to anyone you think
may be interested but is not on this email list.
The intent of the meeting is to provide all members of the community an
opportunity to learn more about USAP earth science, to hear about some of
the issues facing polar earth science, and to provide feedback that we can
take back to NSF. It will be a great chance to pass on your ideas,
initiatives, comments, and criticism, so please attend! Some topics of
interest may include new sample and database requirements, the impact of
the Augustine Commission Report, South Pole redevelopment, and
international collaboration. Even if you can't make it to the meeting,
please feel free to send me comments for discussion. We are planning to
hold a similar meeting at the fall AGU meeting in San Francisco, and you
will hear more about that later.
Minutes from our last meeting in May are posted on the Working Group's web
site at http://antwg.geo.ukans.edu/. The minutes include a synopsis of
reports provided by OPP officials, some news items, and a summary of
discussion, so please browse through.
Bert Rowell will soon be rotating off the Working Group and we are looking
for a replacement. Please contact me if you would like to nominate someone
as a new member. Our current membership is:

Lou Bartek (U Alabama), lbartek [at] wgs.geo.ua.edu

Joann Stock (Caltech), jstock [at] gps.caltech.edu

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me or any other
