Nominations for New Members for the Polar Research Board
The Polar Research Board is seeking nominations for new Board members.
PRB members serve three-year terms, and for this year's rotation we are
seeking nominations in four areas: (1) social science, (2)
engineering/industrial perspective, (3) atmospheric sciences, and (4)
environmental science. Candidates can be from any relevant discipline,
but must be broad, multidisciplinary thinkers with a grasp of the "big
picture" and ideas on how to make the PRB most useful to the polar
science community. Candidates should be actively involved in the
Arctic, Antarctic, or both.
Please take time to consider who might serve as an effective member of
the PRB and forward your nominations to me by October 8. Include the
candidate's name, affiliation, area of expertise, and a phone number or
address if you can. Include a sentence or two about why you believe the
nominee is appropriate. Send your suggestions by email to me at

As background: The PRB was established in 1958 to promote excellence in
polar science and to provide assistance to federal agncies on polar
science issues. The PRB strives to enhance understanding of the Arctic
and the Antarctic, ensure that U.S. research efforts are responsive to
the needs of the nation, encourage coordination and collaboration among
the U.S. polar community, and assist in maintaining our leadership in
polar science. The PRB provides oversight to focused studies that
address important issues in natural and social sciences, technology, and
resource management. The PRB represents U.S. interests and facilitates
U.S. participation of U.S. scientists in the Scientific Committee on
Antarctic Resesarch (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science
Committee (IASC). PRB members meet once or twice each year, participate
in PRB studies, and conduct business by phone, mail, and email.
