International Congress on the History of the Arctic and Sub-Arctic
Region 18-21 June, 1998 Reykjavik, Iceland
INVITATION
The Institute of History, University of Iceland, and the Ministry for
Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Iceland herewith cordially invite
you to attend an international congress on the history of the arctic and
sub-arctic region. In a period of increasing cooperation in various
fields between the peoples who inhabit the arctic and sub-arctic region,
the time is opportune for holding an international congress on the
history of the region. As history is a wide-ranging discipline which
has close links with various other disciplines, the congress is open to
people concerned with all related fields.
INFORMATION
There will be three main themes at the congress:
i) centre and periphery, ii) indigenous culture and external influences,
and iii) farming.
Several papers will be presented on each of these themes. There will
also be single lectures and round-table sessions on a wide variety of
other topics. The opening session will be addressed by H.E. Mr. Halld•r
•sgr•msson, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Iceland,
former Chairman, Standing Committee of the Parliamentarians of the
Arctic Region.
DATE AND VENUE
18 - 21 June, 1998, University of Iceland, Reykjavik (in the Oddi
Building on the University campus).
LANGUAGE
The official language of the congress will be English.
PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME
The Preliminary Programme, together with a registration form, will be
published in February, 1998, and will be sent to all those who express
interest in the congress.
