GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH
ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY
International Arctic Research Center

The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University
of Alaska announces the availability of limited initial funding for IARC
activities. The objective is for these funds to be used as seed money to
start research at IARC and to put IARC on the map as a research institution.
For those unfamiliar with IARC, further details can be found on the IARC webpage at http://www.iarc.uaf.edu/.
Six-months proposals, starting on 1 March 1998 are requested in any
of the research areas listed on the IARC webpage dealing with global change
issues. Proposals with budgets up to $5,000 can request support for the
following:
* Start-up funds for developing new ideas and proposals to other
agencies.
* Supplemental funding for ongoing research funded from other
sources.
* Supplements to graduate student support for global change studies.
* Travel to scientific meetings to report new results.
* Development of curricula and courses on global change.
All activities will be required to acknowledge the financial
support from IARC in reports, papers, dissertations etc. Short progress
reports are due from all funded projects on 1 September 1998.
Proposals should not exceed 2-3 pages in text and illustrations,
not counting c.v.'s, budget page and appendices, and should include:
* Objectives
* Background and literature
* Work statement
* Relation to ongoing activities (if relevant)
* Budget
* 2-page c. v. (not more)
Proposals must be received by 1 March and can be sent by mail, Fax
or e-mail to the address below. All proposals will be reviewed by an IARC
Scientific Advisory Group and funding will be available in March. Another
announcements of opportunity will be released by IARC in mid-1998.
