Update on the SCICEX program
29 December 1999
The U.S. Navy Submarine Force is working with the Office of Naval
Research and National Science Foundation to formulate a Memorandum of
Agreement (MOA) for continuation of the SCICEX program. A draft MOA was
reviewed by representatives of these organizations at the recent AGU
meeting. The current goal is to have the MOA signed by early 2000.It is not possible to discuss any specifics of this MOA until all
parties have agreed to its content and signatures are obtained. In
general terms, the MOA makes provision for two types of operations.a. It allows the possibility of future dedicated cruises along roughly
the same lines as SCICEXs conducted from 1995-1999. There are
currently no dedicated cruises planned.b. It describes a new type of SCICEX – the "Accommodation Cruise" –
roughly modeled on the concept described in the minutes to the
October 1998 "SCICEX 2000" workshop.Additional details will be provided through ARCUS once the MOA is
approved.
