Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), KORDI is announcing an
International Symposium on Polar Sciences. This symposium is the 11th of
its kind, and this year the establishment of KOPRI as an independent
research body will be celebrated. The theme for this year is "Patterns
and Processes in Polar Oceans and Life: Signals and Responses from
Molecules to System."
Jeju, where the meeting venue is located, is the southern most and
largest island of Korea with a mild oceanic, subtropical climate. Jeju
is only an hour away from Seoul, the capital, and well connected by
frequent flights by domestic carriers.
A meeting of Pacific Arctic Group (PAG) is scheduled on Tuesday, 7
September 2004 right before the Symposium at the same venue (Seogwipo
KAL Hotel). This arrangement will provide input from national Arctic
program researchers.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers should be relevant in a global context and significant to basic
science. The symposium will provide an international forum for the
discussion of works currently being carried out in circumpolar regions
in the following topics:
- Climate, carbon, ocean in polar regions
- Dynamics of polar pelagic ecosystems
- Extremophiles from polar regions; biodiversity and biotechnological
potential
There will be an additional session on "Trends in Recent Polar
Research." Contributions on aspects of oceanography and biology in polar
regions and environmental monitoring in polar regions will also be
considered.
Contributors are expected to submit the full version of their papers to
the proceedings of the symposium for publication in KORDI's journal -
"Ocean and Polar Research."
