This engaging biography recounts Washburn's life-long pursuits of
exploring, documenting, and describing the unexplored. An authority on
Alaska's mountains and glaciers, Washburn, who turned 94 on June 7, was
the first person to scale Mount McKinley three times, complete the first
aerial photographic survey of the mountain, and produce the
authoritative map of the peak.
Sfraga describes Washburn's contributions to scientific exploration and
geographic discovery, and shows how at the very core of each of
Washburn's expeditions can be found a few primary motifs: "a fundamental
love for high and distant places, a yearning to discover the unknown,
and the desire to share with others the world's natural beauty and
scientific wonders."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Sfraga has spent over two decades exploring the Alaskan
wilderness. He holds the first Ph.D. in Northern Studies and Geography
from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and is currently an Associate
Vice President at the University of Alaska System Office. The Chairman
of the Denali Foundation, Sfraga is also a founding trustee of the
Sub-Antarctic Foundation for Ecosystem Research, a member of the
Explorers' Club, former Executive Secretary of the Arctic Institute of
North America, US, and a member of the American Alpine Club.
