OVERVIEW
The Associate Director is the chief administrator for both the Center
for Global Change and the closely associated NOAA/UA Cooperative
Institute for Arctic Research (CIFAR). The position works closely with
the Director who provides the scientific leadership for the Center and
CIFAR. The Center for Global Change provides a campus-wide framework for
developing, coordinating, and implementing interdisciplinary research
and educational activities that address the role of the Arctic in global
change. It strengthens social sciences as an integral part of global
change research and builds research partnerships between natural and
social sciences. The main function of CIFAR, one of 13 joint institutes
between universities and NOAA, is to foster research cooperation between
the University of Alaska, other institutions, and NOAA, especially in
the Western Arctic/Bering Sea region. CIFAR supports a wide variety of
research, including atmospheric and climate research, UV and arctic haze
studies, fisheries oceanography, marine ecosystem studies, hydrographic
studies and sea ice dynamics, contaminant effects, and tsunami research.
This position oversees the operation of CIFAR, including determining
research priorities, developing new initiatives, announcing
opportunities for research, organizing peer review of research
proposals, arranging for the funding of accepted proposals, and
monitoring progress. A background investigation may be completed on the
final candidate once a job offer has been made.
