The Cryosphere Specialty Group of the Association of American
Geographers (AAG) is sponsoring an illustrated paper competition at this
year's annual meeting, which will be held in Denver, Colorado from 5-9
April 2005. The session will be co-convened by Dr. Andrew Klein (Texas
A&M University) and Susan Millar (Syracuse University).
An illustrated paper is a poster accompanied by a short three to five
minute talk encapsulating the research problem, methodology, and
findings. The competition is open to any undergraduate or graduate
student completing original cryosphere related research in the past
academic year. Papers on all aspects of the cryosphere are welcome.
The poster must be completed and presented by the student, however, the
paper can be coauthored by the student's advisor. The illustrated papers
will be judged on their originality and contribution to cryospheric
science. At the end of the session, the paper judged to be the best will
be awarded the $250 R.S. Tarr award. Depending on the number and quality
of submissions, second- and third-place awards may be made.
Ralph Stockman Tarr was a glacial geologist and geographer. He studied
under W.M. Davis at Harvard. While serving as Professor of Physical
Geography and Dynamic Geology at Cornell he led numerous scientific
expeditions to Greenland and Alaska.
The deadline for abstract submission for the illustrated paper session
is Thursday, 14 October. All entrants should electronically submit an
abstract to the AAG following the abstract guidelines for an Illustrated
Paper. The submission guidelines can be found at:

After the paper is electronically submitted to the AAG, each participant
should forward a copy of the abstract and its associated Presenter
Identification Number (PIN) provided upon the successful receipt of the
abstract by the AAG to:
