The terrestrial synthesis book of the IBP Tundra Biome, "An Arctic
Ecosystem: The Coastal Tundra at Barrow, Alaska," is now available
online. This book, published in 1980, is an integrated discussion of a
tundra ecosystem rather than a collection of independent papers.
Although the book is divided into chapters on abiotic settings, primary
production processes, soil and decomposition processes, and herbivory,
the complex lines of interaction and influence run throughout. Within
each of these subdivisions, the reader will find the common theme of the
limitation of rates of biological processes by low temperature and
related conditions of short growing season and the presence of
permafrost.
