Abstract submission for the 2012 Alaska Marine Science Symposium closes
Monday, 3 October 2011. The symposium will be held 16-20 January 2012 at
the Hotel Captain Cook and the Dena'ina Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
Plenary and poster sessions feature a broad spectrum of ocean science,
including the fields of climate, oceanography, lower trophic levels, the
benthos, fishes and invertebrates, seabirds, marine mammals, local and
traditional knowledge, and socioeconomic research. The symposium will
also include keynote speakers, workshops, and special sessions.
Please note that the deadline is earlier than previous years. Late
submittals will not be accepted. To submit an abstract, please go to:

Registration is free, and all attendees must register prior to 6 January
2012. Submitting an abstract will not register you for the symposium. To

Alaska Invasive Species

Organizers announce the 12th Annual Alaska Invasive Species Conference. It
will be held 19-21 October 2011 in Anchorage, Alaska at the Millennium
Hotel and Coast International Inn.
The conference is open to the public and has information relevant to a
variety of audiences. Two days of presentations on invasive plants will
include the latest research on invasive plant impacts and spread, herbicide
use considerations, management activities around the state, and sessions to
strategize ways to improve prevention, management, and outreach activities.
The third day addresses all taxa of invasive species including
presentations on invasive insects, animal diseases, and the impacts to
ecosystems from non-native earthworms. Two special sessions of the
conference cover in detail the discovery and management of two aquatic
invasive species in Alaska, Elodea canadensis, and Didemnum vexillum.
A poster session is scheduled for Thursday, 20 October from 5:15-7:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the conference, an Invasive Plants of Alaska Educators
Workshop will be offered on Tuesday, 18 October at 12:30-4:30 p.m. It is
open to all teachers and agency educators. There will also be a free
community lecture on the 18th, at 6:30-7:30 p.m., given by Richard Lee and
entitled "Herbicide Considerations in Integrated Pest Management."
