The Stockholm Resilience Centre seeks a researcher on resilience in
arctic social-ecological systems. The position will be based in
Stockholm, Sweden.

The successful applicant will serve as the scientific leader of the
Arctic Resilience Report (ARR). Position duties include providing
scientific leadership in developing and carrying out resilience
assessment in the ARR, initiating and supporting different project
activities under the ARR, and leading the method development for the
resilience assessment. The position will be the lead person responsible
for synthesizing insights and structuring the interim and final reports
of the ARR, functioning as one of the lead authors.

Candidates should be midlevel to senior academics with experience in
resilience research and integrated assessments. Research experience in
the arctic region is required, as is experience with policy-oriented
assessments and studies and participatory research processes.

  1. University of Alaska Anchorage seeks Two Professors
    Environmental Science / Landscape Ecology & Physical Geography

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University
of Alaska Anchorage together with the Alaska Natural Heritage Program is
recruiting for two fulltime, tenure track positions beginning August
2012.

One position, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, will teach
2-3 courses per semester, advise undergraduate students, conduct
research leading to publication, and participate in university service.

The candidate must have a record of successful teaching and scholarship
commensurate with academic experience, demonstrated ability to teach
undergraduate environmental science courses and labs, ability and
willingness to provide effective advising to students in an
interdisciplinary degree program, and the ability and knowledge to
conduct research in environmental science and working across disciplines
to address environmental problems. Experience with ArcGIS or other
spatial mapping software is required.

Candidates for this position must hold a PhD in environmental science,
ecology, conservation biology, physical geography, or a closely related
field. Candidates with all but their dissertation completed, with
expected completion by August 2012, will be considered.

The other position, Assistant Professor of Landscape Ecology & Physical
Geography, will include a joint appointment and primary research with
the Alaska Natural Heritage Program. The successful applicant will be
expected to establish a strong research program and obtain external
funding to address conservation biology concerns in Alaska. Development
of the research program will be supported initially by existing research
grants. The position will also teach 1-2 courses per year within the
Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (GES) and coordinate
the GES spatial analysis lab.

The successful candidate must have previous experience in spatial
modeling and quantitative, raster-based GIS analysis. A background in
either conservation biology, botany, ecology, or zoology is also
required.

Candidates for this position must have a PhD in landscape ecology,
spatial analysis, physical geography, or relevant scientific field.

completion by August 2012, will be considered.

  1. Institute of Arctic Biology seeks Research Assistant

The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks is offering a research assistantship. The position begins in
summer 2012 and will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant will study interactions of permafrost, fire,
and plant successional processes in altering boreal landscapes in
Alaska. The research will be done in collaboration with ongoing
interdisciplinary climate change impact research, and will focus on:

- Quantifying patterns and rates of change in ecosystems due to
thermokarst through remote sensing and paleoecological studies;
- Evaluating the interaction of vegetation, permafrost soils, and
fire through field surveys; and
- Assessing biogeochemical characteristics that are affecting the
ecological responses.

A Master's degree in ecology, soil science, or geomorphology is
preferred. IAB seeks a highly motivated student with strong interests in
permafrost dynamics and extensive fieldwork.

The assistantship covers full tuition, fees, and 12 month support for a
four-year period through funding from the Alaska Science Center, U.S.
Geological Survey. Interested applicants are encouraged to send a letter
